УРОШ КРАЉ

UROS KING

Detail of the fresco "Nemanjic Family Tree" from the Serbian orthodox monastery Visoki Decani, Kosovo and Metohija, Republic of Serbia

NEW DISCOVERY EMPEROR UROS WAS NOT UROS THE FIFTH BUT JUST EMPEROR STEFAN UROS. HE WAS KING UROS THE FOURTH BUT ONLY DURING HIS FATHERS RULE AND AS A YOUNG KING!

This is why it’s very important to read charters of Serbian kings. They give us information themselves. King Stefan Dusan wrote:

(“… my holy parents and grandparents I was worthy steward and heir to them our God given, king Stefan The Third and my son UROS THE FOURTH, in Christ God faithful autocrat lord of all Serbian lands and Coastal and Greek, grandson of the holy Simeon Nemanja and The First Crowned king Stefan, named angels face Simeon monk and son of the holy king Uros The Third.”).

Dusan is calling himself king Stefan The Third but new revelation and Information for me is that Dusan named his son Uros The Fourth (Uros IV). He was not known as Uros V as we call him today presuming that Dusan was Uros IV. No, Dusan was known as king Stefan The Third and later emperor Stefan and his son was known as king Uros The Fourth and later emperor Uros. That means that first Uros was king Uros I or king Uros The Great 1243-1276. Second, king Stefan Uros II Milutin 1282-1321. Third, king Stefan Uros III Decanski and fourth, Dusan son, as a young king, Uros IV 1343-1355!

In this charter written in medieval Serbian, October 25th, 1343, Deresta (northeast of Prilep), King Stefan Dusan (1331-1346; Emperor Stefan 1346-1355) donates a village and two hamlets in the neighboring area in the Lim Valley to the Monastery of St. Peter and Paul (in the present-day town of Bijelo Polje, Montenegro).

Emperor Stefan Uros (1355-1371). Second Serbian emperor of the Nemanjic state.

Silver "horse and helmet" type. 19mm, 1.195g.

Obverse: Emperor with scepter on the horseback. Cyrillic legend: СФb ZP (SF - ZR - STEFAN CZAR), pellet or a small o in front of the horse and a letter P below under horse.

Reverse: Ornamented helmet. Latin legend: VROSIVS - IPRAOI (UROS EMPEROR OF THE ROME). Cross opening on the helmet facing left.

Reference: Jov 12-1.1 var., D (119/2).

Comment: Rare type that apparently combines the designs and legends from the previous reign of his father Dusan. Both Uros and his father Dusan bore the royal names Stefan and Uros. The reverse legend 'IPRAOI' hints at the Latin "Emperor of the Rome or Roman Empire" used on some early Dusan coins.

Emperor Stefan Uros (1355-1371)

Silver bilingual "horse and helmet" type. 17mm, 0.732g.

Obverse: Crowned emperor on the horseback, facing right and holding a sceptre. Serbian Cyrillic legend: ꙋРО Шb (UROS). Flower or a letter under horse.

Reverse: Ornamented helmet facing right with with ball or ring tipped decorations. Latin legend: X IPERA TO • R ∴ (EMPEROR).

Reference: Unpublished variant compare to Jov 12 7.

Comment: Extremely rare bilingual type with nice patina but with some damage and wear. In Jovanovic catalogue from 2012 there is only 1 registered example, 16mm and 0.60g, with same shorter obverse description containing only imperial title. That example is not the same as ours. Imperial title is split differently, it has IPER on the right side and ATOR on the left side. Therefore our example with description X IPERA on the right side and TO • R ∴ on the left side is unpublished variant of only one registered under reference Jov 12 7.

All other types have imperial title and emperors name, Uros.

Emperor Uros horse type coins apparently combine the designs and legends from the previous reign of his father Dusan but are much more rare and harder to find. Both Uros and his father Dusan bore the royal and imperial titular names Stefan and Uros that can be found on their coins.

Emperor Stefan Uros (1355-1371)

Silver bilingual "horse and helmet" type. 19mm, 0.928g

Obverse: Crowned emperor on the horseback, facing right and holding a lily tipped sceptre. Serbian Cyrillic description: СФb ZP (STEFAN CZAR). Moneyer mark O in front of horses head.

Reverse: Ornamented helmet facing left. Latin description: S IPRAT VROSIV (EMPEROR UROS).

Reference: Jov 12 4.1, J 12 1.1, I (9-1), Lj IX-19.

Comment: These larger horse type coins have become a rarity and are extremely hard to find. Their beauty and historical importance is obvious not only because they are bilingual but because they feature emperor on the horse galloping on the obverse and warrior helmet on the reverse. Two characteristics of medieval warfare and knighthood. Helmet is facing left.

Both Uros and his father Dusan bore the royal titular names Stefan and Uros. On the coins obverse is Cyrillic titular name Stefan and reverse has Latin titular name Uros.

Emperor Stefan Uroš signature from a document, dated 25th April 1357, where he grants to the citizens of Dubrovnik lands from Ljuta to Kurilo. From Serbian Royal Documents at the State Archives in Dubrovnik (1186-1479) 13570425 – car Uroš 2B. It reads: "Emperor Stefan Uros" in the first line without letter T in the name STEFAN. Second line in Latin. I can only work out last word PRIUS which means "first", "original", "superior" or "to go before". In this instance it probably meant to confirm its a original document. XXV could be Roman for 25th, followed by letter A which could stand for April. Full document can be viewed at Medieval Artifacts page.

Reverse: Christ standing in front of the throne, holding book of gospels decorated with 5 gems in his left hand and blessing with his right hand. Surrounded by 6 stars, 3 on each side. Greek initials: IC XC (In Greek: Ιησούς Χριστός - Jesus Christ) above.

Reference: Jov 12 2.3, Lj X-7.

Comment: Extremely rare type without imperial title with lovely natural patina. Big double cross has a base represented by 3 horizontal lines. Emperor is wearing a Nemanjic round imperial crown and has a cross tipped scepter and empress is wearing a forked crown and has a unusual scepter that is tipped with 3 balls or circles.

While emperor appears to have large head empress looks like she has wider shoulders and longer body.

Very interesting type, very well designed with a lot of details and quality mint. There is another similar type below but with imperial title on the right side on the reverse.

Emperor Stefan Uros (1355-1371)

Silver "double cross" coin. 19mm, 0.989g.

Obverse: Crowned Imperial couple Uros and Ana standing, holding jointly patriarchal double cross. Cyrillic legend: Ф Zb (Stefan Czar). 3 dots around queens crown.

Reverse: Christ sitting on the throne, holding Book of Gospels decorated with gems. Greek letters: XC IC (In Greek: Χριστός Ιησούς - Christ Jesus) above. 4 triple dotted marks, one on each corner of the throne.

Reference: Jov 12 29.7, D Page 176 1.

Comment: Base of the double cross is triple dotted pellet. Instead of СФb on the left side there is just letter Ф and instead of ZP on the right side there are letters Zb. Reverse is featured with letters IC XC name and title being reversed so it reads XC (CHRIST) IC (JESUS). Very rare occurrence of title being first and name second. In 99% of coins name initials IC will always be first. Letters C are also reversed facing opposite direction.

Comment: Reverse is featured with a displaced letters IC XC with X being made of 4 parts. Unusual variant where king seams to be standing on the right side and queen on the left, In a unusual reversed order. On almost all examples king is on the left and queen on the right. Reason for this is the very clear and prominent beard that king is wearing. СФb letters are also split with b being placed under СФ. Double cross is also featured with a ball on each end. Only Jovanovic has published similar example claiming to be the only registered example.
